alexxon Three tracks are all with great personality, a fusion of organic instruments plus jumping synths. Various sound design approaches used creatively, like the downsample plus pitch shifting notes...and suddenly your attention was brought back to the jazz saxphone...this is a new feeling that I rarely experience from music, I witnessed a universe of what computer music can do together with traditional instruments, and what beyond our chord routine could be merged into what we familiar with. Favorite track: Livewire.

about

Gradualism is a musical and visual collection that explores a collaboration between multi-instrumentalist/producer Stef Haynes and random chance. Each track in the collection originates from a randomly generated synthesizer patch and a random sequence of notes. In the process of sculpting this raw material into a piece of music, each sequence has undergone a series of incremental changes, slowly shifting the balance from noise to music, disorder to control, and fate to free will.

This process has spawned three distinctive tracks that showcase Stef’s unique approach to music production. Each track in Gradualism features a characteristic synthesizer sound discovered through the process of parameter randomization and morphed into beautiful and strange textures, bouncing arps, and energetic percussion. Sax, flute, and bass clarinet feature prominently throughout the tracks, providing wispy melodies, flowing basslines, and virtuosic solos. Two of the tracks feature a three-piece band of piano, bass guitar, and drums, delivering an improvisatory ensemble performance that speaks to Stef’s background and experience as a jazz musician. Gradualism covers a wide territory in terms of genre and influence, but the collective result is a cohesive sound that uses its origins of chance and randomness to reflect the personality of the creator.
